What eternal mutant is gay
Marvel Makes Its Most Strong Argument For Why Voice Matters
Major spoilers for X-Men #14 ahead!
Year by year Marvel Comics continues to increase its LGBTQ+ inclusion, and the recent X-Men #14 offers a forceful argument for the importance of representing marginalized identities in media after the out gay hero Iceman saves the entire earth and speaks his authenticity. From the huge influx of transgender mutants introduced in this year's Marvel's Voices Pride 2022, to the upcoming debut of a new gay Spider-Man variant, Web Weaver, Marvel's editorial and creative teams continue to prove that they're getting more grave about the genuine, consistent representation of marginalized identities.
In particular the X-Office is chock-full of queer writers and artists, and while there is still a need for more voice of trans and BIPOC voices, the message that Iceman gives to the world in X-Men #14 is nonetheless important. One of Marvel's most celebrated queer characters, the X-Men hero Bobby Drake has been out as a gay man since 2015, and while there contain been several solo Iceman titles that have explored his sexuality, it is still a big deal that a stand
7 Years Later: A Glance Back at Bobby Drake’s Coming Out
It’s been 7 years since Marvel Comics made the decision to have Iceman, one of the most iconic unique X-Men characters, come out as gay. As a gay man who understands the impact of proper mass media representation of minority communities, this was a big deal for me. The X-Men comics have always been an allegory for marginalized and oppressed communities, so all of these characters’ stories have helped me study how to face the same type of discrimination and bigotry in the real world. When it was announced in 2015 that we would view Iceman coming out of the closet, I was so excited about the potential to show general audiences an authentic homosexual character through a designate they would recognize. Now that it’s been years since the announcement, we can reflect on how the character has developed and how well Marvel has represented the male lover community through this character.
First, a little context. In Brian Michael Bendis‘ 2012 The All-NewX-Men, the juvenile versions of the first 5 X-Men were sent to the present by Beast to attempt to change how some of the older versions of themselves had turned out. This resulted in no
Marvel has a storyline which reveals that Iceman of the X-Men is male lover. I just spoke to a journalist who wanted me to comment on this and my comment was along the lines of "If it makes for some great stories, great." There are gay people. It stands to reason there are gay super people.
However, I really don't know if you can do meaningful stories about him being gay. The gay folks I know all possess issues about entity treated as "different" and "unusual." If you're a mutant made of ice, your sexual culture may be the least unusual thing about you. I would think that being the only individual on the planet like that — and constantly being involved in incidents that could mean the destruction of said space body — would possess a bit more impact on your personality and produce a lot more problems than existence attracted to others of the equal gender.
So then the next question — and the whistleblower didn't ask me this but it's being discussed a lot on the web — is "Well, is Iceman gay?" Answer: Iceman is a imaginary character. He's same-sex attracted if the folks writing and controlling his usage at the moment utter he's gay.
I hold not followed the comics closely enough to know how much, if at all, those in charge of

The X-Men have been oft-cited as a parallel for the civil rights movement, but as a tale focused around five white prep school kids, it is true that some of the gravity of the situation was confused in translation. However, the X-Men hold changed vastly over the years, and this basis has given countless writers and artists the opportunity to tackle heavy subjects appreciate classism, racism, homophobia, and ableism through mainstream comics. The downside to this, of course, is that those things usually appear as a metaphor only, and representation still has a drawn-out way to go.
Still, compared to other mainstream comics, the X-Men have always been remarkably gradual. This franchise is a rarity in how consistently it has focused on highlighting the fallacy of bigotry as a major obstacle in its character’s lives, and portraying all forms of intolerance as being deeply wrong. That is what has drawn such a spacious audience to X-Men, and it is what makes it stand out for so many readers. Outsiders have always flocked to this concept, and for very obvious reasons.
The Mutant Metaphor
The preceding years of the X-Men were fairly low on significant social commentary beyond the basic ele
