Hmmm, not quite as I have heard it. It's not the commonest of terms, but when I've heard yes it it has been quite a dismissive designation to refer to adolescent gays who are usually very thin and vapid (so no interest in intellectualism, rather than lack of ability if you see what I mean) and who are image conscious. I think that the term also refers back to the person using it - it suggests that they don't view the person as substantial and don't particularly want them to be anyway - perhaps great for a one-night-stand but nothing more (and so suggesting that the person using it isn't trying to see past image anyway).Agnès E. said:
Mmm... I can't say I have a context, actually, Tim. It's just about someone calling homosexuals chickens... and that this seems to be an AE English pos. Gargl.
I must identify the right French equivalent.
So, apparently it is more related to the same-sex attracted "equivalent" of a blonde? Am I closer to the right usage? Joncat talked about sorts of gay gigolos... which is not necessary contradictory.Click to expand...

Brazilian Slangs with Animals
So now you have learned how to talk about all your pets and favourite wild animals in Portuguese. You’re walking around the streets of Rio and you feel very confident about your knowledge until you hear someone declare “Que gata!” on the street. Gata? Cat? Where?
Turns out Brazilians love to use animals as slangs. And almost all the animals you learned denote different things when you hear it around. So let’s take a gaze at some of them!
Gato/gata
Met someone cute at a bar? A hot guy or girl on Instagram? Brazilians call people ‘cat’ when they think they are attractive. Saying ‘gatinha’ or ‘gatinho’ (little cat) is also very shared and it doesn’t retract from the compliment. Someone who is ‘gato’ or ‘gatinho’ can be attractive to the same extent.
Ele é muito gato.
He is very hot.
Ela é gatinha, cara.
She is hot, man.
Galinha
Unlike the first slang we saw, being called “chicken” is far from flattering in Portuguese. Someone who is galinha is usually a womanizer or someone who likes to sleep around (men or women).
Ele é galinha.
