15 LGBTQ Activists of the Past and Present You Should Know
It’s LGBTQ Event Month — a period to celebrate passion, but also to champion equality and LGBTQ rights.
Throughout June, cities around the world have been hosting marches in honor of LGBTQ pride. In many countries today, people are free to join these marches, marry whomever they choose, and openly show their adore. But that’s still not the case for LGBTQ communities in every state, and even in countries where it is safe to march, there is still a elongated way to proceed before true equality is achieved.
Without these incredible activists, the LGBTQ rights movement would not be where it is today.
In honor of Pride Month, Global Citizen is celebrating the brave activists fighting for LGBTQ rights in places where it can be dangerous to do so, and the inspiring champions for change, without whom there might never have been a Pride Month.
While certainly not an exhaustive list by any means, these are 15 LGBTQ activists you should know.

Seeing a traits in any form of media and being qualified to relate to them, whether that be because of their race, sexuality, gender identity or any other factor, is extremely important. It's something that makes those that own been silenced or taunted feel heard and acknowledged in a world that's turned them away for far too long. Ensuring that a wider audience of people are represented in a TV display, film or even video game is vital to spark change; it's dire in exposing those who are more privileged to a wider array of people so that, in time, these differences grow a part of what society deems as the 'norm'.

Apex Legends is a game like no other; with a widely diverse cast of characters it has an astonishing amount of representation, particularly for the LGBTQ+ community. Its creators are fantastic at not only creating LGBTQ+ characters but writing incredibly heartfelt lore around their journeys too.

Representation, particularly LGBTQIA representation, has been present in Apex Legends since the very beginning. However, it hasn’t been obvious and there is always that interrogate of ‘how can developers of games like Overwatch and Apex Legends own authentic representation?’ The truths, the answer, is a lot more complicated than that.
But that’s an article for another day. Regardless, the question hasn’t stopped Respawn from including more LGBTQIA characters in the roster of Apex Legends, and it certainly hasn’t stopped players from feeling invested in these characters and making them one of their have.
Currently, there are 8 Legends that have been confirmed to be part of the LGBTQIA society, with Catalyst being the latest. Relationships haven’t exactly been confirmed – outside of Gibraltar, who seems to be at ‘it’s complicated’ with his previous boyfriend , Nikolas, as well as Loba and Valkyrie – but Legends don’t include to be in a relationship for their sexuality to be confirmed.

Starting off with probably the most known LGBTQ+ characters of Riot, we own Neeko, Leona, Diana, Caitlyn, and Vi, all canon lesbians. Neeko's sexuality was a big deal when first announced, not only because she was the first canon queer champion of League but also because her sexuality is explicitly portrayed through her voice lines, as she often flirts with female champions and shows a disinterest in the Shoo'ma of men she shapeshifts into.
A number of diverse Rioters have confirmed that Leona and Diana were always meant to be lovers, but someone at Riot Management decided against it, and so they were portrayed as almost sisterly in the elderly lore. Fast-forward to the present day, they are gay and LOUD about it! The Rise With Me short story officially canonized the couple, and official pride art showed both of them with the lesbian flag.
Caitlyn and Vi were already a popular ship before their romantic interest in one another became explicit, as shown in Arcane, Legends of Runeterra, and more subtly in the Warriors cinematic. They have a
