Drazan’s Extreme Agenda “Conflicts With Her Recent Ads” 

New reporting from Willamette Week is exposing how dangerous Christine Drazan’s extreme agenda would be for LGBTQ+ Oregonians. According to the state released today, Drazan supports allowing Oregon businesses to discriminate against LGBTQ+ employees, which is a harmful position that “conflicts with her recent ads.”

When searching the endorsement of the ultra-conservative, anti-gay marriage, and anti-abortion organization, Oregon Family Council, Drazan answered on a candidate questionaire that she supports “including religious exemptions in legislation to prevent restrictions of religious freedom in hiring and insurance mandates.”

According to Willamette Week, “Conservative Christian organizations ask such questions in part because they don’t want religious employers to have to pay the insurance costs for gender affirmation treatment or abortions.”

Legislation like this would endanger protections for LGBTQ+ Oregonians and allow for discrimination in housing, health concern and employment.

Representation is power, especially in politics. So says the LGBTQ Victory Fund, the national organization which works to increase the number of openly LGBTQ elected officials at the local, state, and federal levels.

Victory Fund told PGN that an unprecedented number of LGBTQ people are running in the midterm elections for a wide range of positions. Among those are some high profile candidates who would construct history nationally if they were to be elected.

More than 600 LGBTQ candidates will be on the ballot Nov. 8, an increase from 432 candidates during the last midterm elections in 2018. Victory Fund has now endorsed 464 candidates running in the 2022 midterms, the most in the organization’s 31-year history.

Among the high-profile candidacies are two lesbians running for governor:  Maura Healey in Massachusetts and Tina Kotek in Oregon. If elected, they would become the first out lesbian governors in the U.S.

Healey and Kotek own already made history. In 2014 Healey became the first out lesbian attorney general and in 2013 Kotek became the country’s first out lesbian speaker of a state home of representatives.
