Toyota Tops List Of Corporate Donors To Anti-LGBTQ+ Politicians

June is the month committed to celebrating Pride, with massive parades and other events taking place across the country. Last week Toyota joined other major brands in sponsoring LA Pride, one of the largest events in the nation. Just weeks prior, however, Toyota and several of its franchisees were identified as the largest corporate donor to anti-LGBTQ+ politicians by Data For Progress.

The activist group’s Movement Corporate Accountability Project outlined a list of companies and their contributions to politicians that oppose or have opposed important legislation like the Equality Proceed, which would prevent discrimination against a person based on gender identity or sexual orientation nationwide. The data gets even more specific, delineating companies that also sponsor Pride events, and of that organization, Toyota and its franchisees contributed nearly twice as much as any other with $601,500 in donations from 2019 to Protest of 2022.

While the automaker’s participation in Pride events is a step worth applauding, the simultaneous donations (even at the franchise level) to those in force impeding hu

Sometimes, someone else has said it better and more succinctly than you can:

“The CX-9 is a reliable choice for the immense majority of buyers. It combines interior comfort with room for up to seven passengers, along with athletic handling that’s atypical for an SUV. Fuel economy is above average for the class, and the engine has sufficient power for city driving. The cabin in higher trims rivals those in luxury-badged SUVs, and there’s a long list of high-tech features for you to choose from.”

That bit of wisdom is from U.S. News and Planet Report, a source of real news and something that is sure to anger the Donald Trump supporters who read Gaywheels.com (We probably have a few). As I was sitting at my desktop computer on a Sunday morning, trying to settle between brunch or the gym (brunch won), I was perusing what other car experts have said about the all-day, all-gay 2017 Mazda CX-9 and came across the above paragraph…and decided it said all that really needed to be said. The only thing I could find wrong with what USNAWR said is that the last sentence ends with a preposition.

Indeed, this year’s soon-to-be-cleared-from-dealer-lots Mazda CX-9 is avera

A Brief Rant About Homophobia In The Car Community

Last month, during the celebration of Movement Month, my hometown decided to sketch a few downtown crosswalks in the colours of the Pride flag. It was supposed to be a symbol of support and solidarity towards the LGBTQ+ community. But, thanks to one misguided individual, it ended up putting a literal inky mark on the reputation of the car community.

Simply place, someone did a burnout on the painted crosswalk and left tire marks all over it. Although the kid that did this didn’t know that the rainbow crosswalk was a symbol of Pride, it was seen as an act of hatred towards the LGBTQ2+ community. Since the population at large tends to associate burnouts with car enthusiasts, this gave local petrolheads a bad identify for quite some time.

I’d like to say that it was an isolated incident, but it isn’t. In evidence, these acts of vandalism have occurred across the earth with much more malicious intent. Obviously, this is not representative of the majority of people within the automobile community. Yet, it’s not the only way in which petrolheads have been associated with homophobia.

It’s no secret that a few superstars of the machine world have made sta

Research among LGBT consumers shows that majority of us want to spend our money with companies that possess progressive policies towards their LGBT employees. The only problem is, that facts hasn’t been easy to find — until now.

Gaywheels.com has done the footwork and offers this list of gay-friendly manufacturers that sell vehicles in the USA. To be considered gay-friendly, an automakers must, at a minimum, have a policy that prohibits workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

Once you’re armed with the knowledge, you have the decision whether or not to spend your money with companies that are gay-friendly. Of course, we encourage you to vote with your checkbook and support companies who treat their LGBT employees equally.

UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 2018
We’re happy to report that all major automakers doing business in the U.S. now meet the minimum standard for classification as LGBT-friendly. Going forward, we’ll share information with you that shows which own gone the extra mile to prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender identity, to offer medical coverage for trans employees, and more.

“The automotive world isn’t always a easy place for LGBT shoppers,” proclaims Gaywheels.com, founded in 2005 to combat that situation. “Showrooms and garages are recognizable more for macho swagger and technical jargon than for welcoming gay men—much less lesbians or transsexuals.”

It’s hard to argue that the situation in the showrooms is dramatically changed, even in the more welcoming, gay marriage-friendly planet of 2014. But many auto companies have stepped up to woo LGBT customers, General Motors most prominently. Since 1993, the corporation has had an employee resource collective that focused on equal treatment for LGBT workers. Now it’s called GM PLUS (People Love Us). And GM actively markets its cars to homosexual consumers.

In 2011, Gaywheels found Hyundai/Kia, Suzuki and Porsche to be “gay-unfriendly” for failing to safeguard their LGBT employees from workplace discrimination. Today, Porsche has been moved into the friendly column and Suzuki is out of business in the U.S., so only Hyundai/Kia is still on the list. The automaker had no immediate comment.

In 2009, I reported on Subaru existence the most gay-friendly carmaker, and its outreach clearly is working--judging by the many "Le
