Why Elsa doesn't have a love story, gay or otherwise, in 'Frozen 2'
Ever since "Frozen" premiered in 2013, people in the LGBTQ community have set up Queen Elsa's story to be a powerful allegory for queer identity, and hoped she might be given a gay affection interest in the coming sequel.
But Elsa doesn't include any type of love-related partner in the upcoming movie, despite the famous fan theories about her sexuality.
"When we agreed to do the sequel, we agreed we were going to not build it [from] the outside in," codirector Jennifer Lee said in an interview with Insider at the Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, California this past September. "We just couldn't do it."
Lee and her codirector Chris Buck, along with producer Peter Del Vecho, first started thinking about the story for "Frozen 2" about three years ago.
"What we did was spend a lot of time with each of the characters," Lee said. "I journaled as the characters, we did personality tests, just a lot of in-depth serve and looking at where they are in their lives. For us, really looking at what Elsa's journey is, it was her need to grasp her powers."

So, how gay is Disney’s Frozen?
I’m not surprised that it’s such a giant hit. I am a little surprised at the sustained effort of Christian fans to spin Frozen as some sort of Christian allegory (more on this in an upcoming post).
For now, though, I want to address something I noted in passing in my review: the question of gay-culture themes in Frozen.
In my review I mentioned this issue (also noted in positive reviews by other critics) largely to dismiss it as a point of concern — not that I wasn’t aware of the themes in interrogate, so much as that I didn’t think they warranted getting upset over. However, a point I overlooked earlier has just been brought to my attention that I assess does warrant mention.
