Boys' Love — also recognizable as "BL" or "Yaoi" — is a one-of-a-kind genre of anime that focuses on romantic relationships between two male characters. Though it's a niche part of anime as a whole, BL has always been popular among certain groups. With the normalization of LGBTQ+ inclusion in anime, the genre has become more widespread than ever and has even hit the mainstream in some cases.
BL has a notorious reputation for many, due to its often problematic depiction of queer couples. Luckily, many modern titles portray much healthier relationship stories, such as titles like Given or Sasaki and Miyano. However, that doesn't denote there aren't any fantastic old BL stories as well. Either way, the genre is full of wonderful titles that newcomers are sure to enjoy.

Before BL dramas or movies became mainstream, BL animes and mangas were like the first frontier, depicting male romances in fiction even when it was taboo in society. In anime, the BL genre is closely akin to yaoi or shounen ai, which are labels that describe a very similar type of story. Yaoi is more explicit, shounen ai is more innocent, and BL tends to be the best of both worlds. This genre is a popular niche among certain demographics. I don't love using the term fujoshi, which has somewhat negative connections. Let's just say that people with great taste usually survey BL animes! Despite its long history, there is surprisingly not a lot of anime to observe in this genre. Trust me, I've done my explore on this topic, searching high and low for some BL anime recommendations. You'd be amazed and disappointed at how little the selection there is compared to all the other genres. Movie, 2016, 1 ep Me:-Author:10 BL movie, sums up teenage love and it's a healthy dynamic. only problematic because of an adult but the main couple is not toxic at all. imo top tier BL media, but the art manner is not everyone's cup of tea.
