My first time was unforgettable.

I circled the block for an hour, heart pounding, stomach fluttering, trying to summon the courage to enter my hometown's only same-sex attracted bar. When a fairly large organization of fairly grand women approached the door, I took a big gulp of air and joined their ranks, hoping to proceed unnoticed. I stood behind them, underage and unbearably nervous, my hair glued in a flawless wedge, my counterfeit I.D. all but dissolving in my sweaty palm.

The doorman gave my ersatz driver's license a rapid glance and waved me through the door. Before I knew it, I was in my first gay bar! The only queer-friendly watering hole in my small hometown was, ironically, AmVets--the American Veteran's Club (don't tell!). AmVets was a skanky unheated dungeon that smelled like a cat box. But to my inexperienced and desperately horny adolescent eyes, it seemed like the Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center.

I searched the room for other gay men. Strangely, I only spied dykes. Consulting a poster taped to the wall, I discovered that I had arrived on "ladies' night." Damn! I wound up spending the evening being good-naturedly mother-henned by Doris, a harder-than-nails, dyed-in-the-wool dyke who

Gay Clubs are Complicit in Violence and Homophobia

Content Warning: This article discusses sexual assault and homophobia.

The overnight I asked my girlfriend to go out with me, I was (shamefully) seven vodka-redbulls down at a very popular direct nightclub for a subject bar crawl. In response to my kissing her on the cheek, surrounded by snogging and grinding straight peers, I was called inappropriate and asked to ‘take it home’ by a member of staff. Later that darkness, as we moved to a different room, a man reached his hand up my dress, hands drunkenly grabbing for my underwear as I walked up the stairs. This might seem like a particularly unlucky night – but it’s actually a series of events that happened to me over and over again during my second year. After countless nights of leering, sexual harassment and plain homophobia, I decided I was never going to a straight club again. No matter how many cheap student nights or society events were held there – I couldn’t go back to venues where I was treated like a porn category again and again.

So, on my 20th birthday I decided

As I wrote last month, I had a complete month's worth of columns cued up for June, which I took down in deference to the Orlando shooting, its victims, and its survivors. In place of those columns, I posted my thoughts about the shooting and larger issues of inclusion for all Americans, including we whose colors are not just red, pale and blue but the entire rainbow. Yesterday, Americans celebrated our country -- its founding, our democracy, our republic. We are also coming up on the one month anniversary of the horrific tragedy in Orlando. In this sobering, somber year, July Fourth was a morning of patriotism not just celebratory but reflective, of stars and stripes born from revolution, of the call for corrective move and the demand for justice.

Along with what else it means, moving forward means honoring daily living. Attending to the sacred details of everyday living is, in its way, as transgressive against disruption as more overt revolutions. If it is about anything, Urban Residence Blog is about that, and so Urban Dwelling Blog resumes after last month's hiatus. Below is the first column of what is, effectively, a new year, and so it has a celebratory aspect. But it is also deferent

Unity under scrutiny: Troubling reports cast shadow over Montreal gay nightclub

Allegations of bouncer aggression, mishandling of incidents and staff misconduct spark boycott and calls for accountability

Montreal’s Gay Village is supposedly a place for LGBTQIA2S+ folks to enjoy themselves openly. One of its most trendy nightclubs, Club Oneness, is well acknowledged amongst Montreal’s younger demographic—both queer and straight.

The club’s website describes itself as “an inclusive club open to all,” and that “with respect as a core value, Oneness prides itself on providing a protected environment.”

On Nov. 5, Concordia anthropology pupil Clara Meagher made an Instagram upload calling for a boycott of the club.

“Unity claims to be a harmless, queer space for its patrons, and yet recurring events have proven otherwise,” claims Meagher in the post. It includes screenshots from the club’s Google reviews accusing the bouncers of assaulting patrons amongst other accusations.
