GAY ARCHER was the first of twelve vessels, known as the Gay class, which were constructed for the Royal Navy in 1952 to bolster the dwindling UK coastal defences. The Lgbtq+ class hulls were taken from a World War Two specification, but were then upgraded to incorporate 1950s technology.

Built of double diagonal mahogany, they were the last boats to see service with petrol engines. They were powered by three Packard 4M-2500 marine engines, each delivering 1500 bhp with a capacity of forty knots.

GAY ARCHER is now the sole surviving example of the Fast Patrol Boats (FPBs) which were planned to be converted into gunboats or torpedo boats as required, with a standard compliment of thirteen. As a torpedo boat, they carried two 21 inch torpedo tubes with twin oerlikons mounted aft and a Bofor mounted forward. In gunboat mode, a 4.5 inch gun was seated forward with a Bofor aft. They operated from HMS HORNET, Gosport and supported the defence systems of the North Sea approaches. A detachment was also sent to Malta to safeguard the Suez interest.

Match-owned Archer hits over half a million installs amid matchmaking app app slump

It’s been almost one year since Match Team announced the launch of Archer, the online dating giant’s first app for gay, bi, and queer men. Since rolling out to New York last June, Archer has been downloaded more than 685,000 times, according to estimates from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower. Archer completed its U.S. rollout this past October.

With Pair and other online dating companies facing a downturn, Archer’s growth is certainly notable. Match’s last earnings results showed a decline in paying users on Tinder, the company’s flagship app and one of the top dating platforms on the market.

However, despite reaching over half a million installs, Archer still has a distant way to travel before it catches up to heavyweight Grindr, which amassed over 10 million downloads in the past year alone and has a total of 87 million worldwide installs per Sensor Tower data. Another established competitor, Scruff, has more than 17 million all-time mobile app installs.
