‘Arrow’ casts its 1st Black gay superhero

There’s been a wave of LGBT characters and storylines on television over the past few years as the LGBT movement in the actual world continues to progress. And now it appears that progress in fiction has extended to the world of superheroes, as it’s been announced that “Arrow” has cast “Ben and Kate” actor Echo Kellum to play the series’ first-ever Jet gay superhero.

According to reports, Kellum will play the role of DC personality Curtis Holt, also known by his superhero name of Mr. Terrific. For fans that don’t know, Mr. Excellent was introduced in the DC space in 1997 and he’s an Olympic gold-medal winning decathlete as well as a self-made billionaire. Mr. Terrific decides to don a superhero outfit and fight crime after the death of his wife and unborn baby.

However, in his original iteration, Mr. Terrific isn’t written as homosexual. But according to “Arrow” executive producer Marc Guggenheim, the decision was made in the essence of being inclusive when it comes to minority characters.

“We’re often asked when we’re going to add another LGBT character to the show and our version of Mr Terrific happens to be gay for anyone t

Arrow Casts First African-American Gay Superhero

Mister Awesome aka Curtis Holt will join the cast of Arrow season four as a recurring character and the people behind the reveal have confirmed that this version of Holt will be gay. Actor Echo Kellum will take on the role when the reveal returns this Autumn, Kellum is probably best known for his role on Ben and Kate.

While not the first LGBT character to be added to the Arrow series, the casting does mark the first openly gay African-American superhero on our TV screens. Marc Guggenheim, executive producer for the show has spoken about the addition:

We’re often asked when we’re going to add another LGBT character to the display and our version of Mr. Terrific happens to be gay for anyone that cares about that kind of stuff

For anyone not familiar Mister Excellent is a genius billionaire who becomes a superhero after he looses his wife and unborn youth. His mask is not just part of a disguise and allows him to communicate instantly with specially designed T-spheres that possess multiple abilities including holographic projection, tech assimilation and projectile blasts.

Echo Kellum Joins "Arrow" as Mr. Terrific

When I first heard Mr Teriffic was going to be on Arrow, I idea he was going to be a rival, competitor or head of a company similar to Palmer industries. So I was disappointed when i study that he was going to be an employee of Palmer industries.

Now with him being gay? There has been a tendency lately in television for supporting (sometimes token) characters of color creature gay on TV. I have notice it a lot with black male characters a lot lately. From Lafayette on right blood, Officer Julien Lowe – The Shield, “Captain Ray Holt” [Andre Braugher] – Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Keith Charles [Mathew St. Patrick] – Six Feet Under, Hank (Kevin Daniels) and Noah Nicholson, Noah’s Arc. It is interesting that many times there may be 1 or maybe 2 black male characters on a show and they may end up being gay. There are so few black superheroes and now on Arrow they are going to make Mr Terrific gay? IDK

Us too, Katrina Law. Us too. And we loved it. Arrow finally introduced another member of the League of Assassins in tonight's outing: Leader Ra's al Ghul's daughter Nyssa (Law), and in a shocking twist, revealed she and Sara/the Black Canary (Caity Lotz), who she had been sent to Starling Urban area to bring back into the killer group, were in a relationship.

We attended a Q&A with Regulation and Arrow bosses Andrew Kreisberg and Marc Guggenheim to talk about the decision to make Nyssa gay and Sara bisexual person, as well as what's next for Oliver (Stephen Amell) now that Sara is staying in town and they ended the episode with a fiery hookup. Plus, the executive producers tease Felicity's (Emily Bett Rickards) backstory and tension with Sara...

I was excited for a hot minute (because we idea we were getting a comic publication faithful rendition of our hero) and was heading to bed when I read that Arrow Season 4 had cast the role of Mister Excellent who all inky geeks know is one of the smartest men in comics. Echo Kellum got the part and we were excited….then we read this:

Entertainment Weekly reports that Ben and Kate luminary Echo Kellum has been cast as Curtis Holt, A.K.A. Mr. Terrific in the upcoming season of CW’s Arrow. At Comic-Con International: San Diego, it was revealed the character would be joining the exhibit but the casting wasn’t announced at that time.

In comic books, Mr. Incredible is Michael Holt, a brilliant olympic athlete who becomes a hero after the death of his wife and child. In Arrow, EW describes Holt as an inventor who works for Palmer Technologies under Felicity Smoak. It was also revealed at SDCC that this version of Mr. Terrific will be gay.
