What to Know About Grabbing a Mutt by the Scruff

The scruff, the loose skin around a dog’s neck, plays a vital role in canine conduct and communication. From a young age, dogs experience interactions involving the scruff, primarily through their mothers. A mother dog uses the scruff to transport her puppies, keeping them safe and under control. This natural action is instinctively understood by puppies, who move limp when carried in this behavior, trusting their mother’s guidance.

For humans, however, the scruff presents a more complex subject. While watching a mother canine might make scruff handling seem instinctive, many misconceptions be about its proper use. One frequent mistake is lifting or carrying an adult dog by the scruff, which can lead to discomfort or injury. Unlike a mother dog, humans lack the instincts and precision to treat the scruff without causing harm.

Understanding the context in which scruff handling is appropriate is decisive. While grabbing the scruff is not a substitute for training, it can sometimes be used effectively to convey dominance or adjust minor behavioral issues—when done correctly. Omegaverse Collection — what is scruffing??

Anonymous asked:

Great question, Anon!

Scruffing is when someone grabs the back or middle of the neck of their pup or significant other to carry them or make them pliant. Parental figures and pack members scruff their pups to move them or scruff them when the pups are being disobedient. Scruffing has a relaxing outcome on the mind and body and causes the person being scruffed to go lax. Adults may scruff their partners to relax them or comfort them. Scruffing is only effective if the person being scruffed considers the person scruffing them a parental figure, pack, or a partner. Only omegas and some betas can be scruffed by their partners, it is ineffective on alphas.
