Amaro Gayo Coffee farms are located in the district of Amaro in the southern region of Ethiopia (about 550km south of the capital, Addis Ababa). The farms main objective from inception is to produce high-value, specialty natural and washed coffees from the Amaro area.
This exceptional coffee is exported through Ethiopia’s only female miller/exporter, Asnakech Thomas. Native to the Amaro region, Asnakech decided in 2005 to return to Ethiopia and improve the coffee quality and living conditions of her community. The coffee is scrupulously harvested, sorted and milled at her retain facilities, allowing her remarkable control over her crops.
The farm has both moist and dry mills where local growers bring their freshly picked, ripe cherry for processing. Asnakech is said to be very strict in selecting which coffees will be processed at her washing station and mill, choosing only ripe a

Amaro Gayo, Premier Ethiopian Coffee Milled and Exported by a Woman March 28, 2014
In the Ethiopian valley of Amaro lies a coffee mill known for its aromatic flavors, a combination of rich fruit, luscious citrus, and mouth-watering chocolate. Exported world-wide, Amaro Gayo coffee is famous not only for its excellent flavor, but also for the fact that it is the only coffee in Ethiopia milled and exported by a woman.
In 2005, Asnakech Thomas returned to her native town of Ethiopia from England to not only improve the quality and flavor of coffee, but also the living conditions of the community in which she grew up.
Concerned about the poor health care available in Amaro and rural Ethiopia, Thomas hopes that Amaro will establish a hospital for mothers-to-be and their childish children. Expectant mothers in Amaro have to explore 116 kilometers to the nearest hospital to distribute their babies. Experiencing first-hand how her sister clueless a baby during her travels, Thomas has a personal desire to own better care at a closer distance for mothers and their young children. “The mothers in the countryside are the authentic organizers of the families’ affairs, health and training for chil
Amaro Gayo BIO
Ethiopia is definitely the first country appearing in our favourite and “must – have” list. To be known as motherland of coffee arabica, coffee in Ethiopia gets famous by its distinctly unique flavours of wildly fruited and floral, winey and very complex appetite due to the mixture of varieties and climate.
Ethiopia itself accounts for only around 3% of the global coffee market. Coffee is important to the economy of Ethiopia. Around 60% of foreign income comes from coffee, with an estimated 15 million of the population relying on some aspect of coffee production for their livelihood. (Source: Wikipedia.org).
Coffee plays a very important role in the social and cultural life of Ethiopia. Important events often commence with a “coffee ceremony”. People spend hours together to roast coffee freshly, then young people serving coffee to elders, guest are invited to exhibit their respect and friendship. Coffee ceremony is used to introduce and build politicians in the world. About 50 % of the Ethiopian coffee show is consumed in the domestic market.

Disclosure: Pull & Stream received coffee samples for this post, however, as always, all opinions are 100% my own.
A several weeks back a confidant sent me a list of his favorite coffee roasters across the region. New York roaster, Irving Farm, was top of his list. After trying a few of their coffees, I can perceive why.
This Ethiopian coffee is a naturally processed, ecological coffee from the Amaro Mountains of southwestern Ethiopia. The coffee is produced by Asnakech Thomas, an independent female producer, mill operator and exporter. She is doing some a
