Bud Light continues to be suffering a sustained decline in sales two months since the beer brand sparked backlash and calls for a boycott after sending a commemorative can to genderqueer influencer Dylan Mulvaney.

In the week conclusion June 3, Bud Light's sales revenue—the brand's dollar income—was down 24.4 percent compared to the same week a year ago, industry data by Nielsen IQ provided to Newsweek by Bump Williams Consulting shows—a further decline compared to the week prior but a marginal improvement on the 25.7 percent nadir in the week ending May 20.

Since the calls for boycott began at the initiate of April, both Bud Light's sales revenue and volume—the number of units of beer sold—saw steep declines in the first five weeks, before stabilizing at a relatively sustained level of decline compared to the same period in 2022.

"The declines accelerated coming out of the April 1 week, and have settled in the mid-high -20 percent range ever since," Dave Williams, vice president for analytics and insights at Bump Williams Consulting, told Newsweek. Modelo Especial dethroned embattled Bud Light as the best-selling beer in the US last month, a new report says. 

Bud Beam sales plunged 23% year-over-year in May to $297.3 million, according to facts compiled by consumer-behavior analyze firm Circana and distributed with Insider. Meanwhile, sales of the Mexican lager surged 15% to $333.1 million.

Conservative outrage over a March Madness promotion that featured transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney sparked calls for a Bud Light boycott. 

Bud Light's parent corporation Anheuser-Busch initially stood by the promotion, but as the right-wing backlash grew, the executive who arranged the Mulvaney campaign took a leave of absence, and the brewing firm reportedly offered to purchase back expired cases of Bud Light from distributors and gave free cases of beer to distributor employees.

Analysts at JPMorgan recently warned that Bud Flash sales could drop as much as 13% this year.

Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Bud Light has lost its top detect in the US beer market to Constellation Brands’ Modelo Especial, after a backlash from conservatives over a social media promotion with the transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney.

Sales of Bud Light and Budweiser dropped 24.6% and 9.2%, respectively, for the four weeks ended 3 June from a year earlier, while Modelo Especial sales rose 10.2%, according to the consulting company Bump Williams, which sources data from NielsenIQ.

In May, AB InBev’s chief executive, Michel Doukeris, said it was too early to have a full view of the impact from the backlash.

Jon Reynolds, a certified instructor in the business of craft beer at the University of Vermont, said: “Bud Light’s stumble with Dylan Mulvaney will certainly hurt their chances to take market share, but Miller Lite, Coors Bright and Modelo will reap most of those rewards.”

Anheuser-Busch Inbev reported a drop in U.S. revenue in the second quarter as Bud Light sales plunged amid a conservative backlash over a campaign with trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney.

The world’s largest brewer said Thursday that revenue in the United States declined by 10.5% in the April-to-June period from a year earlier, “primarily due to the volume decline of Bud Light.”

It has lost its place as America’s best-selling beer after more than two decades, slipping into second place in June behind Mexican lager Modelo Especial, which is also owned by the Belgium-based ABInBev.

The company faced blowback after sending a commemorative Bud Light can to Mulvaney, who posted it to her millions of social media followers.

Conservative figures and others called for a boycott of Bud Light, while Mulvaney’s supporters criticized the beer trademark for not doing enough to support her. Mulvaney has said she faced bullying and transphobia, criticizing the brand for not reaching out to her amid the furor over their partnership.

The world’s largest brewer and parent company of Bud Light said adjusted earnings for the latest quarter rose 4.1% to $5.4 billion on revenues that climbed 5% to $15.6 billion.

Revenue in the United States for the July-September period, however, tumbled 13.5%. AB InBev, based in Leuven, Belgium, noted that sales to retailers were down “primarily due to the volume decline of Bud Light.”
