vuntage gay

For many, June represents the month of pride; a time to celebrate, instruct and communicate all that is queer, gay and fabulous. Although today organism gay isn’t much of a deal, back in the 50’s it was a dangerous label to have. Throughout history, thousands have lost their lives because they were labeled as ‘gay’ or ‘queer’ and many lived out their true sexual preferences in secrecy. As it’s almost the end of Pride month, I wanted to have a watch at some celebrities from the golden age of Hollywood who were male lover, or at least thats what the rumours said. As you can notice, I’m mixing things up a bit with this week’s Vintage Gay announce. I follow an art blog (you can see it in my blogroll) called ultrawolvesunderthefullmoon and the artwork of this Japanese painter caught my attention. In the images above and below I see homosexual men from the 1980s. Their clothing, preppy haircuts, and cleancut look scream 1980s to me.

Ben Kimura (木村べん) b. 1947 – d. 2003 was a Japanese gay erotic artist who along with George Takeuchi and Sadao Hasegawa, is noted as a pivotal figure in the second wave of contemporary gay artists that emerged in Japan in the 1970s.

You can learn more about this artist and see some more of his serve here.

Gay treasure is love. Gay sex is love. In Loving: A Photographic History of Men in Love 1850s–1950 we see men loving men in various ambrotypes, daguerreotypes, glass negatives, tintypes, cabinet cards, photo postcards, photo strips, photomatics and snapshots. Pictures of love should raise a smile. But when love is outlawed, these images show us how far we’ve appear and in many places still have to journey. Life is hard. To live a secret animation when love between consenting adults is banned and censured by people sure they know better chance making the difficult unbearable.

“Our collection began when we came across an former photo that we consideration was one of a kind. The subjects in that vintage photo were two young men, embracing and gazing at one another – clearly in love. We looked at that photo, and it reflected us back to ourselves. We were intrigued that a photo favor that could have survived into the 21st century. Who were they? And how did their snapshot end up at an antique shop in Dallas, Texas?
