Yosur Shukri Al-Kukhun
Yosur Shukri Al-Kukhun is a Palestinian documentary film-maker as skillfully as a social activist in the field of humanitarian and voluntary perform. She grew up in Palestine, and had won two awards in the field of documentaries (both documentary films are related to the subject of gender and violence against women). Al-Kukhun has been in the field of visual documenting since 2011, to date. This is Not Me
Bu Ben Değilim (This is Not Me) tells the story of gay men who have had to wed women to hide their sexual orientation in the face of societal and family pressure in Turkey, and their own internal conflicts.
The three main characters of the motion picture, Mustafa, Mehmet and Yusuf migrated to İstanbul from small towns and appear from conservative families. The film reveals each characters’ world: exhausted from continually playing at social roles and lying about their identity, faltering between their reality and their dreams, frustrated and stuck in their lives. It also looks at the subject from the aspect of women who are the other victims of these marriages.
Mehmet and Yusuf, both married to women, act the part of heterosexual males and family men within their possess social circles. Privately, however, they are passionately in love with their male lovers and can only live their truth within the parallel lives they have built with them. The driving character of the film, Mustafa, is Mehmet’s lover of 15 years. Mustafa describes Mehmet as a »homophobic homosexual«. During the first couple of years of their relationship Mehmet violently abused Mustafa because of guilt.

Not Illegal, but Taboo
Houssem sits in a café on the main street of Tunis. As a trainee and gay man in his early twenties, Houssem is unwilling to donate his real name for fear of discrimination and possible intimidation. He doesn't talk to the Tunisian media at all about his online work as a gay rights advocate, because all too often the people making the inquiries turn out not to be journalists.
"Social media helped the revolution here, and now we desire to use these tools to fight for our rights," he says. "Some people have supported us, but there have also been a lot of negative reactions."
In the jubilant atmosphere after 14 January 2011, Houssem and a group of like-minded individuals founded Gayday, an online magazine for homosexuals in Tunisia. Suddenly what had appeared impossible under dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali seemed to be within reach: being capable to express oneself openly on gay rights issues without fear. Gayday grabbed many Tunisians' attention for publicizing a topic that had long been discussed only behind closed doors.
