Gay club Blues becomes church community hub

A FORMER gay block is being converted into a very different kind of venue.

A FORMER queer bar is entity converted into a very different benign of venue.


The Nice News Gospel Collective Church is refurbishing the ex-Blues Lock on Stamford Lane, Ashton, into the Rainbow community centre.


"It's a case of gay bar turns Gospel!" joked pastor Michael Whittle. "We'd like the building to be used by the whole community such as mums and tots groups and for arts and crafts and computer studies.


"We'd also like to include a cafe and use the building for drama, theatre, dance and concerts.

"We need plenty of help putting the building endorse into shape because a lot of the inside has been smashed up, as it was thought it was going to be demolished. Offenders who are doing people service under supervision are painting, cleaning and generally helping out, as are church volunteers who are painting and decorating.


"But a lot of work still needs to be done and we're appealing for anyone who can support to get in touch."

East Midlands organises a wide range of outdoor activities especially walks of about five to ten miles usually held on the third weekend of the month. Activities hold place in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Rutland and Northamptonshire, and sometimes beyond.

East Midlands also offers camping weekends, and hostelling weekends including one at Christmas: all with walks which are publicised separately. Any GOC member is very welcome to join in these events, or just come on the walks if you don’t desire to stay for a whole weekend away. For example, this year we have camping and hostelling weekends organised in Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, and the Apex District, all with walks attached.

We are well known for our annual open-air theatre visit to Tolethorpe Theatre close Stamford, which includes a ‘Bring Your Own’ picnic. If you like the idea of a trip on a Narrow Boat, we also set sail on a Springtime voyage every year on the Ashby Canal near Hinckley.
