Leslye Headland Confirms ‘The Acolyte’ Is The “Gayest Celestial body Wars,” And Claims That R2-D2 Is A Lesbian
Star Wars: The Acolyte showrunner Leslye Headland confirmed that her series is “the gayest Star Wars,” and she’s into it. She also claims that R2-D2 is a lesbian.

In an interview with TheWrap, Headland first feigned surprise that making Star Wars gay would not be a talking point. She said, “Is it going to be a talking point?”

When J.J. Abrams said last year that he expected gay characters to play a part in the diversity of the future movies, many fans had hopes he was referring to Poe and Finn.
But in the comments sections on somepieces, many fans expressed confusion: “What about C-3PO? And R2-D2?” Even some writers got in on the joke.
The speculation that C-3PO and R2-D2 were gay is not new, as fans have debated (and joked about) that possibility on message boards for at least a decade. One YouTube user even made a “Brokeback Mountain” parody about the the two droids.
The argument that the droids were queer rests on C-3PO’s mannerisms. Because he had the effete affectations stereotypically linked with gay men, he must have been same-sex attracted himself. And because R2 was his constant companion, he must have been C-3PO’s lover.

The Star Wars spin-off series The Acolyte has officially arrived to Disney Plus. Fans are excitedly binging the novel episodes of the series, hoping to see the storylines that take place so many years before the Skywalker Saga. During an interview to promote the series, however, showrunner Leslye Headland made some curious comments to concur that The Acolyte is the “gayest Star Wars“ and that R2-D2 is a “lesbian.”
The interview took place with The Wrap and naturally the topic of LGBTQ themes in the Disney Plus series came up. The interviewer noted that these themes would be “a talking point,” while Headland seemed surprised because they’re something that arrive naturally to her being a queer person. Actress Amandla Stenberg then chimed in:
“Because nerds are gay.”
The interviewer then tried to speak of that “some nerds are very not gay and are very threatened by gay stuff.” While Stenberg agreed, she said, “Well, that’s true. But in my world nerds are gay.”
At that point, the interviewer asked whether or not the LGBTQ themes were included to be a “fun element.”
