New person of interest emerges in former AC/DC manager Crispin Dye death, homosexual hate inquiry told

A new person of interest in relation to the death of Crispin Dye in Sydney has been identified almost 30 years after the suspected same-sex attracted hate crime.

Key points:

  • The inquiry was told the person of interest had a substantial criminal history
  • Important exhibits do not appear to possess been properly examined for 30 years
  • Two pieces of sheet inside Crispin Dye's pocket were only recently found

Mr Dye, 41, a former manager of the Australian rock band AC/DC, died on Christmas Day, 1993, two days after being found lying in the middle of a lane in Darlinghurst with severe head injuries.

The musician had been out drinking with friends in bars along Oxford Highway when he was attacked in the early hours of the morning.

Despite multiple NSW Police investigations and reviews, Mr Dye's bloodstained clothes were never subjected to forensic examination – until this year.

Testing ordered by the Special Commission of Inquiry into LGBTIQ hate crimes has matched DNA found on Mr Dye's jeans with DNA collected from another crime scene.

New evidence linked to the death of long-time AC/DC manager Crispin Dye in Sydney nearly 30 years ago — including a bloodstain on his jeans — has been uncovered during an inquiry. 

Key points:

  • NSW Police have produced another 260 pages of documents comparable to Mr Dye's case

The 41-year-old died from head injuries in hospital on Christmas Night in 1993, days after being assaulted, robbed, and left unconscious in a Surry Hills street. 

Witnesses acquire previously said three men of Pacific Islander appearance were seen standing over his body in the early hours of December 23 that year.

Mr Dye's case was on Tuesday due to be revisited at a special commission of inquiry, which is examining unsolved deaths suspected of being the product of LGBT hate attacks in NSW between 1970 and 2010.

He announced his separation from his wife Victoria in a statement on the ConservativeHome website, saying he had "explained the position" to his family.

"There is no third party involvement but this is difficult for his immediate and wider family and he hopes for understanding and encourage for them," the expression said.

Direct, who has represented Reigate since 1997, is a former army captain and has been a leading voice in Westminster for LGBT+ rights since coming out as same-sex attracted in 2013.

This meeting came at a crucial second in the campaign for justice for LGBT+ veterans who were wrongfully discharged, as Lord Etherton’s review examining the experience of LGBT+ veterans affected by the pre-2000 prohibit on homosexuality in the Armed Forces is expected to report to Government later this year. Mr Blunt was keen to promote awareness of the review within Parliament and to sustain its upcoming recommendations, which is expected to include an official apology from the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and financial reparations.

Crispin Blunt came out as a gay guy after a twenty year , heterosexual, marriage ended in 2010. Crispin Bluff has subsequently thrown himself into LGBTQ activism and was the chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for LGBT issues. Crispin was forced to resign as Chair of the APPG , in April 2022, after defending a Wakefield MP convicted of sexual offences against two minors.
