Each time the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck has rolled into Los Angeles, they've drawn throngs of stoked gentle serve lovers eager to try their innovative yet playful flavors. Due to the success of their pop-ups (err, park-ups), founders Doug Quint and Bryan Petroff are building their first West Coast brick and mortar, set to open its doors in mid- to late-spring.
The soft serve shop will be located in the quickly up-and-coming Broadway District of Downtown L.A. We decided to check in to see what Quint has planned for the first West Coast installation of their popular mushy serve shop.
LAist: We're adorable stoked you're playing for keeps this time. What made you decide on L.A. for your first West Coast location?
Doug Quint: When we did our ice cream truck here, we did really well, and the response to us coming for good has been really positive ... You can get mediocre frozen yogurt anywhere in L.A
Big Gay Ice Cream in LA
Big Lgbtq+ Ice Cream truck
Originally I was going to be gone the week Huge Gay Ice Cream came to LA for their ice cream pop-up. Fortunately (sadly?) I ended up being in town this week. On Tuesday, I went to the first stop of the BGIC tour in front of Duff’s CakeMix. It was about 10 minutes to 2 PM when they would begin serving. There was already a small line of about 7 people including Ink and Ink.Sack chefs Michael Voltagggio and Cole Dickenson. Since I hadn’t eaten lunch, I ran over to Ink.Sack and scarfed a Beef Tongue Reuben and half a Cold Fried Chicken (don’t worry people, they’re small and I left room for ice cream!).

I met Bryan and Doug from BGIC who told us about renting a truck and having it wrapped for the LA tour. Don’t fret New Yorkers, you still have your truck and shop!
For the West Coast version, the gentle serve was made with Straus dairy from Straus Family Creamery.
We couldn’t decide what to get but eventually I narrowed it down to the Salty Pimp and my friend got the Mermaid. Later I found out the popsicle maker had missed her flight so they were goi

Ice cream. You scream. We all scream. For ice cream. But with this ice cream you scream so hard your head explodes. It’s that good.
I moved to La La Area a couple of months ago from NYC, dwelling of Big Gay Ice Cream. Earlier this year I was talking to my good friend Patty, who had just been hired there.
“THEY PUT WHAT ON THE ICE CREAM??” I remember skeptically saying to her all in shouty caps after she told me what their twist on plain ol’ soft serve was. It was sacrilege. How could this catch on? But oh, did it ever catch on. You observe, fortune favors the bold, and with toppings such as wasabi pea dust, cayenne pepper, and key lime curd, Big Lgbtq+ Ice Cream is making a bold statement.
These bold flavors caught on so much that Big Same-sex attracted Ice Cream is taking its show on the road: all the way to sunny L.A. That’s right, BGIC is making its Los Angeles debut. So if you’ve ever dreamed of trying some crazy-delicious flavor combinations, now’s your chance. Big Lgbtq+ Ice Cream has a pop-up truck here until Saturday, October 27!
I hopped over and had a pair of delicious treats to see if it is just is pleasant here as it
In a nutshell: At this New York-based hangout, soft-serve gets a makeover that brings refreshing uniqueness to the classic creamy treat.
Most importantly…
My earliest memories of soft-serve are all from Foster’s Freeze: I’ll never forget the after-school trips and post-dinner runs to select up a chocolate-dipped twist soft-serve kid’s cone or an Oreo Twister. It was an trial made better only by fresh-out-of-the-fryer french fries from the grill section of the restaurant (my taste for experimental combinations developed early).
Douglas Quint and Bryan Petroff, the owners of Big Lgbtq+ Ice Cream (hereafter referred to as BGIC), also had a knack for experimentation. They launched their ice cream truck in summer 2009, dedicated to putting a imaginative spin on the usual soft-serve cone. BGIC’s first brick-and-mortar location in East Village opened its doors in summer 2011, followed by the West Village notice in winter 2012. Philadelphia and Los Angeles are scheduled to possess their own outposts by the cease of this summer.
Ice cream shops can be found on every other block in the municipality, but BGIC one-ups them with unlikely toppings on its classic sof
