Mr Hollande and his ruling Socialist Party have made the legislation their flagship social reform since being elected a year ago.

After a tortured debate, the same-sex marriage and adoption bill was adopted by France's Senate and National Assembly last month.

The bill was quickly challenged on constitutional grounds by the main right-wing opposition UMP party of former president Nicolas Sarkozy.

But the Constitutional Council dominated on Friday that same-sex marriage "did not run opposite to any constitutional principles," and that it did not infringe on "basic rights or liberties or national sovereignty".

It said the interest of the kid would be paramount in adoption cases, cautioning that legalising same-sex adoption would not automatically represent the "right to a child".

Comedian Frigide Barjot, who has become a foremost mouthpiece for the anti-gay marriage movement, denounced the decision as "a provocation" and called for the campaign to continue.

On April 23, 2013, France became the 14th region to legalize marriage for same-sex couples. Following 136 hours of heated debate, the Assemblée Nationale passed the law known as "mariage pour tous" (mariage for all) which also allowed married same-sex couples to adopt children.

Between the union of Vincent Autin and Bruno Boileau on May 29, 2013 – the first two men who said "yes" to each other in France – and the conclude of 2022, 70,658 homosexual couples have been getting married, according to information provided by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE).

These unions represent about 3% of all civil marriages performed over the past 10 years, a stable proportion since the law was enacted.

Australia (2017)

On Dec. 7, 2017, the Australian Parliament passed legislation allowing gay and lesbian couples to legally wed. Route came just three weeks after Australians voted in favor of legalizing gay marriage, by a 62% to 38% margin, in a non-binding, nationwide referendum. Along with New Zealand, Australia became the second country in the Asia-Pacific region to to build same-sex marriage legal.

Although recent gains have been made in advancing equality for same-sex couples, the majority of the world’s countries do not own any legislation permitting same-sex marriage. As of 2014, only 16 countries acquire laws allowing gay marriage.  The majority of those countries are in Europe and South America, while the rest of the world struggles to gain basis for this meaningful right.

It is crucial to note, however, that legal recognition of gay couples varies from state to country and even within countries. Some countries provide full recognition of gay marriage, while other provide for limited civil union status, to even countries that criminalize same-sex marriage such as Uganda.

France legalized gay marriage after much effort and debate in May 2013, becoming the 14th country to do so. Despite more than 60% of France approving of same-sex marriage, the approval of same-sex marriage provoked acts of hostility and protests that drew in hundreds of thousands of people from all over the country.
